HVACDiscoverable field guide

Your primary Google category is doing more than your review count

November 3, 2026

Set the primary category to HVAC contractor and stop there until it is right. Whitespark's local ranking survey puts that one field ahead of reviews, links, and website content for map pack visibility, so a wrong category caps everything else you do.

The field owners skip because it looks finished

Most HVAC profiles were claimed years ago, often by whoever set up the phones, and the primary category was picked from a dropdown in about four seconds. If it says Air conditioning contractor on a company that books mostly furnace repair, or a broad home services label, Google has filed you under the wrong shelf. Searches for furnace repair near me then match competitors first, and no amount of posting fixes the mismatch.

Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey asked 47 local search experts to score 187 signals. Primary GBP category came out first for local pack and Maps visibility. Proximity scored second and keywords in the business name third. Reviews, the thing owners obsess over, sat far lower as individual factors.

What to set, and what to leave alone

Pick the category that matches the work you want booked, in Google's own wording. HVAC contractor is the umbrella most full-service shops belong under. Add secondary categories for distinct services you actually run trucks for, like Air conditioning repair service, and skip categories for work you would decline. Every category is a promise Google tests against your reviews and service list.

Google Business Profile Help is blunt about service-area setup: if customers do not visit your address, hide the address and list service areas instead, up to 20 of them, by city or ZIP rather than a radius. List only areas backed by real job history. Sterling Sky's testing found the service area list itself does not move rankings, so treat it as coverage honesty, not a ranking lever.

The two-hour audit that follows the category fix

Once the category is right, check the fields Whitespark scores next. Business hours matter more than owners expect: being open at the moment of the search is a top-five pack factor, which is why shops with honest extended emergency hours show up at 9 pm and quieter profiles do not. If you list 24-hour service, someone has to answer. A profile that claims it and rings out trains the worst possible signal.

Then read your services list out loud. Each service should match a page on your site and a job your techs ran this month. Cut the rest. A short, true list beats a padded one because the profile, the pages, and the review text start telling the same story, and that consistency is what relevance scoring is actually measuring.

What not to chase this quarter

Skip geotagging photos and weekly Google Posts as ranking tactics. Controlled tests reported by Sterling Sky found no ranking lift from either. Photos still help a human decide you are real, so add real truck and job photos, just do not expect the file metadata to move you up the pack. The order that works is category, proximity you cannot change, then the steady review flow covered in the companion guide.

Frequently asked questions

What should an HVAC company pick as its primary Google category?

HVAC contractor, for most full-service heating and cooling shops. It is the category Google maps to the broadest set of money searches, and Whitespark ranks primary category as the single strongest map pack factor. Narrower labels belong in the secondary category slots.

Does hiding my address hurt my HVAC rankings?

Not when you are a genuine service-area business. Google's own help tells businesses that do not serve customers at their address to hide it and list service areas instead. A visible address is a trust signal for a real storefront, but faking one risks suspension, which is far worse.

How many service areas can I list on my profile?

Up to 20, entered by city or ZIP code. List areas you actually work in and can reach within your promised response times. Testing by Sterling Sky found the service area list does not itself lift rankings, so padding it to the cap buys nothing.

Do Google Posts help an HVAC company rank higher?

Controlled tests have found no ranking lift from Google Posts. A post can still be useful as a seasonal notice a human reads on your profile, but it is not a ranking lever. Put the same hour into your services list and review flow instead.
